A tree over a roof does not get dropped. We tie into it, cut it in sections, and lower each piece to a clear spot on the ground. Limbs come off first, then the trunk in short lengths. The tighter the space, the smaller the pieces.
Power lines change the plan. In Bay City the city runs its own electric utility, and it trims trees growing into city lines. On Consumers Energy lines the wire from the pole to your house is the property owner's responsibility. Consumers can arrange a temporary disconnect so the tree work is safe.

The emerald ash borer turned up near Detroit in 2002, and Michigan was the first state it hit. It has killed tens of millions of ash trees here. Many of those were planted in yards and along streets to replace elms lost to Dutch elm disease. That disease reached Michigan around 1950 and killed millions of trees.
Dead ash does not stay safe to work on. The wood goes brittle fast, limbs snap off, and tops break out of the tree. Once an ash has been dead six months or so, climbing it is not worth the risk. A dead ash leaning at the garage is a job to book before the next big wind.
Oak wilt is the other one to watch here. It moves root to root between oaks that grow close together. Beetles carry it to fresh cuts, so the DNR says leave oaks alone from April 15 to July 15. Red oaks can die within weeks of catching it.
Wind and ice do most of the damage here. Wet clay ground and a heavy crown are a bad pair when the gusts come off Saginaw Bay. Whole root plates lift out. Ice loads the limbs until they fold.
Storm damage tree removal starts with the parts that can still move. Hung up tops and cracked limbs come down first, on ropes, before anyone works under them. Then the trunk gets cut into lengths and the brush comes off the lawn. If the tree took the fence with it, we can rebuild the fence once the wood is out.
