How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in Michigan?

Tree removal usually runs from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand. National cost guides put a typical removal at about $385 to $1,100. Reported averages run from $435 to $985, depending on which guide you read. Those are the numbers to start from for a Michigan yard.

Size and access set the rest. Cost guides put a 60 to 80 foot tree near $800 to $1,500, and the biggest trees at $2,000 or more. A crane can push a job past $2,500. What does tree removal cost by tree size?

Height and trunk size drive the hours. A short tree comes down in an afternoon. A tall one can take a full day and more gear. Here is what three national cost guides publish, blended into a low and a high for each size.

Does the kind of tree change the price?

The spread on ash is wide for a reason. A live ash in an open yard is a simple job. A dead one over a driveway is not. Condition and what sits under the tree move the price more than the species name does.

Why does a dead ash cost more to remove?

Michigan’s invasive species program says the emerald ash borer was first found in the state in 2002. It has killed tens of millions of ash trees here, in forests and in neighborhoods. Standing dead ash is a common sight on property lines around Bay City.

University extension guidance says a dead ash turns brittle. The beetle carries decay fungi that rot the branches fast, which makes the tree harder and more dangerous to cut down. That same guidance says an ash is easier and cheaper to remove while it is still alive.

Cost guides list dead trees at $75 to $400 when they stand in the open. That same dead ash over a garage is a different number. Brittle wood is no place to climb, so the work moves to a bucket or a crane.

What does it cost to take a tree off a house or a power line?

Rigging is the cost driver here. The tree comes down in pieces on ropes instead of one drop, and slower work costs more. Cost guides put crane assisted removal on trees over 80 feet at $1,500 to $2,500.

Power lines add a step before any cutting. Consumers Energy publishes that trees on or near the service drop, the wire running from the pole to your house, are the property owner’s responsibility. The utility recommends hiring a qualified tree company. It will also set up a temporary disconnect and reconnect so the tree work is safe.

If a line is already down, call 9-1-1 first, then the utility. Stay clear of the tree and the wire until crews arrive.

What does a storm damaged tree cost to clean up?

A tree already on the ground is the cheaper end. Cost guides put fallen tree removal at $75 to $300, and uprooted trees at $300 to $500. Gravity did most of the work.

A tree still standing after a storm is the other end. Cracked limbs and hung up tops hold load. That load has to come off before anyone works underneath. Cost guides put rush calls at $450 and up, and as high as $5,000 in the worst cases.

Cost guides also note that home insurance often pays for removal when a tree hits a house or another structure. How much does stump removal add?

Stumps are priced on their own. Published ranges run about $100 to $525 per stump to pull one out, and $158 to $450 to grind one down. One guide puts a tree plus its stump near $1,072 on average.

Stump work also disturbs the ground. Michigan law requires utility lines be flagged before any excavation, and MISS DIG 811 handles that request for free. When a whole property is coming back to open ground, the stumps come out as part of clearing the lot.

Some stumps come out with a building instead. On a teardown the stump goes with the rest of the demolition work, while the ground is already open.

What happens to the wood and the brush?
