We turn standing brush into mulch on the ground

Forestry mulching opens up overgrown ground in a single pass. One machine cuts standing brush, undergrowth and small trees and grinds them into mulch. The mulch stays on the ground as a cover layer. Nothing gets piled, burned or hauled off.

At Contracting Pros, forestry mulching is part of our land clearing work. It fits ground you want opened up but not dug up, like old fields, fence rows, trails and hunting land. We are based in Bay City and run our own equipment. Estimates are free, and we are licensed and insured.

What We Handle

  • Forestry mulching of standing brush, undergrowth and small trees in one pass
  • Mulch left on the ground as cover, with nothing piled or hauled off
  • Stumps of the cut growth mulched down near ground level in the same pass
  • Selective mulching that leaves the trees you mark to keep
  • Old fields, overgrown pasture and fence rows opened back up
  • Shooting lanes, trails and food plot openings on hunting land
  • Trails and access lanes into back acreage
  • Overgrown lots, woodlot edges and storm-damaged brush cleaned up

How brush mulching works

The machine is a track loader with a mulching head, a spinning drum lined with steel teeth. It cuts brush and small trees where they stand and chews them into mulch. The stumps of what it cuts get mulched down near ground level in the same pass.

The mulch drops where the growth stood and covers the soil. No brush piles get pushed up, so the topsoil stays where it is. You are left with open ground you can use again.

Mulching is the wrong tool for a house, garage or pole barn site. Those sites need the stumps and root balls out through land clearing, then grading from our excavation work. A dead or leaning tree over a house needs hazardous tree removal. A barn or shed in the way comes down through our demolition work.

Land management for old fields, fence rows and hunting land

The Michigan DNR's control guides say autumn olive spreads rapidly in old fields. Glossy buckthorn grows in pastures and fence rows and creates dense thickets. It does best on sunny, moist sites. Both shrubs were once planted for wildlife food and cover.

Forestry mulching knocks these shrubs down and opens the ground back up. The guides call glossy buckthorn one of the most difficult invasive shrubs to control. Taking out a dense thicket of it brings a dense crop of seedlings. Treat mulching as the first pass, and plan a follow-up for the regrowth.

On hunting land, we mulch shooting lanes, trails and openings for food plots. Selective mulching leaves the trees you want to keep standing. Michigan's invasive species program calls red oaks an important acorn producer for wildlife. We also open access lanes into back acreage and clean up storm-damaged brush.

Forestry mulching services on wet clay ground

Bay City sits on the old Saginaw Bay lake plain, where the soil is mostly poorly drained clay and silt-clay. Heavy equipment can rut and pack soft, wet soil. Ruts can also injure the feeder roots of trees growing nearby.

Frozen ground carries the machine best. Michigan State University Extension says logging on frozen, snow-covered ground may reduce rutting and compaction damage. Spring thaw works the other way and can leave woodland soil open to rutting. When the timing is yours to pick, we plan mulching around the thaw.

Cold weather also helps the trees you keep. MSU Extension notes that bark tightens near or below freezing, so nearby machines are less likely to knock it off. We work from Bay City across Bay, Saginaw, Midland, Arenac, Tuscola, Isabella and Genesee counties. Call or text (501) 520-1783 for a free estimate.

How We Work

How a Job With Contracting Pros Runs

From the first call or text to the final walkthrough of the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Tell us what needs to come down and where the property sits. Call or text (501) 520-1783 and we will set a time to look.

2

Site visit and estimate

We look at the structure, the access and what sits around it. Then you get a free estimate for the demolition.

3

Permits and prep

Utilities get shut off and capped, and a MISS DIG 811 dig notice typically goes in. We pull the demolition permit and the historic district approval where Bay City calls for one. An asbestos survey and state notification get ordered when the rules cover the building.

4

The teardown

The structure comes down with our equipment, in pieces where the site is tight. Debris gets loaded out as the work goes.

5

Cleanup and walkthrough

The hole gets filled, compacted and topped with soil and seed. Then we go over the finished site with you before we leave.

FAQ

Forestry Mulching Questions, Answered

Common questions about forestry mulching across the Great Lakes Bay Region. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (501) 520-1783

What is forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching cuts standing brush and small trees and grinds them into mulch in one pass. A mulching head on a track loader does the work. The mulch stays on the ground, and the stumps of what it cuts are mulched down near ground level.
How much does forestry mulching cost?
The price comes down to acreage, how thick the growth is and how big the stems are. Wet ground and tight access add time. For published market ranges, see our land clearing cost guide. Call or text (501) 520-1783 for a free estimate on your ground.
Will the brush grow back after mulching?
Some of it will. Michigan DNR guides say cut autumn olive and glossy buckthorn resprout unless the cut surfaces are treated with herbicide. Birds also carry in new seed. Regular mowing of the opened ground can help keep seedlings from taking hold.
Can you work around trees I want to keep?
Yes, selective mulching takes out the brush and leaves the trees you mark. Michigan's invasive species program says not to prune oaks between April 15 and July 15. Beetles carry oak wilt spores to freshly pruned or injured trees, and an infected red oak dies. So when the timing is yours to pick, we mulch close to red oaks outside that window.
Can I build on mulched ground?
Not as it stands, because a house, garage or pole barn site needs the stumps and root balls out. Under a crawl space, Michigan's residential code typically calls for the ground to be cleaned of vegetation and organic material. We clear the building spot through land clearing and can mulch the rest of the property.
Do I need a permit for forestry mulching?
A job that disturbs an acre or more typically needs a Michigan soil erosion permit. So does work within 500 feet of a lake or stream. In Bay County, the county's Office of Soil Erosion and Sediment Control handles those permits. We check what your job needs before the machine goes in.
