Bathroom remodeling in Bay City often means working in a small room inside an old house. The median home here was built around 1941. Tub and shower walls get cement board or another listed backer, installed the way the manufacturer calls for. A waterproof layer goes over that before any tile is set.
Venting matters as much as waterproofing. Michigan code says bathroom exhaust air cannot be recirculated in the house and has to go outside. The code sets 50 cfm as the minimum intermittent rate for a bathroom. A licensed electrician wires the fan, and the duct has to run all the way outside.
