How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost in Michigan?
National cost guides updated in 2026 put most bathroom remodels between about $6,000 and $25,000. One guide puts the national average at $15,586, with most projects between $6,456 and $24,715. Another lists $6,000 to $18,000, with an average of $12,000.
A Michigan remodeler’s 2026 guide puts a mid-range update at $18,000 to $28,000. That covers new fixtures, a vinyl plank floor and a vanity. A full luxury overhaul with a tile shower and moved plumbing runs $45,000 to $75,000 and up.
These are market numbers from published guides, not our price list. What your bathroom costs comes down to its size and how much of it changes.
What does a bathroom remodel cost by project?
Cost guides price a remodel by the type of room and by how much of it changes. In this table, the two Michigan rows come from the Michigan remodeler’s guide. The rest come from national cost guides.
| Project | Published market range |
|---|---|
| Half bath or powder room | $1,200 to $15,000 |
| Minor cosmetic remodel | $2,400 to $10,000 |
| Guest or hall bath | $3,500 to $20,000 |
| Mid-range remodel, 50 square foot bath | $14,609 to $19,040 |
| Mid-range update, Michigan guide | $18,000 to $28,000 |
| Primary bath | $7,000 to $30,000 |
| Full gut renovation | $9,000 to $30,000 and up |
| Tub to shower conversion | $2,000 to $12,000 |
| Walk-in shower in place of a tub | $5,000 to $12,000 |
| Full luxury overhaul, Michigan guide | $45,000 to $75,000 and up |
Wide ranges are normal. A cosmetic refresh and a full tear-out are different jobs, even in the same room. Our bathroom remodeling work covers both a single shower rebuild and a full remodel.
What does a small bathroom remodel cost?
The guides split widely on small bathrooms. One national guide prices a 5 by 7 bathroom, about 35 square feet, at $2,450 to $14,000. Another puts a 40 to 60 square foot bathroom at $12,695 to $14,845.
The low figure fits a light refresh that keeps the layout. The high figures fit a full remodel of the same small room. Fixtures do not shrink with the room, so a small bath still needs a full set.
Floor tile is its own line. One national guide puts floor tile work at $600 to $1,800, before any shower walls. We set bathroom floors through our tile floor installation work, including subfloor repair where the old floor has gone soft.
What does a walk-in shower or tub to shower conversion cost?
One national cost guide puts a tub to shower conversion at $2,000 to $12,000. A second guide lists $1,200 to $10,000. The first guide breaks its price out by the type of shower that replaces the tub.
| Shower that replaces the tub | Published market range |
|---|---|
| Prefabricated shower stall | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| Walk-in shower | $5,000 to $12,000 |
| Tile shower | $6,000 to $12,000 |
| Curbless shower | $8,000 to $15,000 |
Plumbing changes add to those numbers. The same guide puts moving a drain line at $900 to $1,100. A new shower valve runs $700 to $1,200, and several plumbing changes together can pass $2,000.
Keeping the shower where the tub sat holds those costs down. A licensed plumber handles the drain and valve work. We schedule that trade around our tear-out and tile work.
Where does the money go in a bathroom remodel?
Labor is the biggest share. One national guide says labor averages about half the total, within a range of 40 to 65 percent. Moving fixtures and custom tile work push labor up.
| Line item | Published market figure |
|---|---|
| Tearing out the old bathroom, billed separately | $600 to $2,300 |
| Floor tile work | $600 to $1,800 |
| Vanity and shelving, with labor | $1,500 to $4,500 |
| Fixtures | $1,200 to $3,600 |
| Plumbing work, average | $5,545 |
| Complete shower remodel, average | $8,044 |
| Permits | About 4 percent of the total |
Moving a toilet or tub to a new spot is plumbing work. One national guide notes that it means hiring a licensed plumber.
What moves the price in an older Michigan house?
Census figures put the median Bay City home at around 1941. About half of the city’s housing units were built in 1939 or earlier. Bathrooms in houses that old often hold plaster walls, a cast iron tub and a soft subfloor near the tub.
Surprises behind the walls show up in plenty of remodels. In one national guide’s survey, nearly 1 in 4 homeowners hit unexpected water damage repairs. About 22 percent faced unplanned structural repairs to walls, subfloors or framing. Another guide puts water damage repair at $500 to $4,500 for an average bathroom.
Old tubs add their own cost. One guide puts tub removal and disposal at $300 to $1,200. It notes that heavy cast iron tubs can raise disposal fees.
Plan a cushion for what the walls hide. One national guide recommends setting aside 20 percent for unexpected expenses. When the plaster comes off, we reframe where needed and hang new drywall through our framing and drywall work.
Do you need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Michigan?
For finish work, typically not. Michigan’s residential code lists tiling, carpeting, cabinets and similar finish work as exempt from a building permit.
Plumbing and electrical changes are where permits typically come in. Michigan’s residential code calls for a permit before anyone alters, converts or replaces a plumbing or electrical system it covers. On our jobs, that work goes to a licensed plumber or a licensed electrician.
We guide you through the permit side and schedule the licensed trades. Your local building department makes the final call on what your plan needs.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
Most take a few weeks. A Michigan remodeler’s 2026 guide puts a same-layout remove and replace at 2 to 3 weeks. A custom remodel with moved plumbing and a custom tile shower runs 4 to 5 weeks.
National guides line up with that. One says most projects take between 2 and 12 weeks, with 2 to 4 weeks as the average. A tub to shower conversion alone takes three to seven days, per another guide.
Special order tile or a custom vanity can add wait time before demolition starts. Settling those choices early keeps the schedule moving.
