Excavation is the dirt work that comes before a new building and after an old one comes down. A foundation dig starts with the corners of the building staked out on the ground. We dig to the depth on the plans and leave room to work around the footings. A basement takes the biggest hole, while a crawl space or a garage takes less. Exterior footings typically go 42 inches below grade under Michigan's residential code, which protects them from frost.
Once the foundation walls are in, dirt from the dig goes back around them as backfill. We place it in layers and pack each one, so the ground next to the house settles less.
The median home in Bay City was built around 1941. An addition on a house that age puts the new dig right beside an old foundation. We dig that edge with care and leave the soil under the old footing in place. The build that follows runs through our home additions work.
Site prep comes first on any new pad or foundation. Topsoil is soft and full of roots, so we strip it where the building will sit. Then we cut the high spots and fill the low ones, and the fill gets packed firm. A pad for pole barn construction or a garage gets built up a little above the ground around it.
Michigan's residential code typically calls for a 6 inch minimum drop in the first 10 feet from a foundation. Most land around Saginaw Bay is a nearly flat old lake plain. Its soil is mostly poorly drained clay and silt-clay, so water drains away slowly. Rough grading and finish grading give that water a way off.
We also cut in driveways and access lanes and shape the dirt for what goes on top. A lane into a back lot gets a slight crown so rain runs off. If brush or small trees stand in the way, our land clearing opens the ground first.
